The group were led on an escorted walking tour of Union Station by Bill Jenkins of GO Transit and Derek Boles of the Toronto Railway Historic Association. The history, the architecture, the behind the scenes operations facilities, and the hidden spaces with future potential… we saw it all.
We reconvened at the GO Transit Training Room where we enjoyed a variety of interesting presentations from some particularly knowledgeable people.
Moderator: Edward Levy, Senior Consultant, BA Group. Ed is a former Chair of the GTTC, Transportation Advisor to the Toronto Board of Trade, Vice-President of the Toronto Railway Historical Association and member of the Union Station Advisory Group.
Presenter: Derek Boles, A high-school English teacher who has served as the President of the Toronto Railway Historical Association. Derek is a member of the Union Station Advisory Group, and is also currently writing a book on the history of Toronto railways. Derek presented an illustrated history of the creation of Union Station.
Presenter: Tim Laspa, Program Manager, South District, City of Toronto, Urban Development Services, City Planning – Transportation Planning. Tim discussed the City of Toronto’s plans and process to preserve and revitalize the station, while also enhancing its prime function as the City’s principal transportation hub.
Presenter: Jennifer Keesmat, Partner, Office for Urbanism. Jennifer was a lead member of the consulting team which recently completed the independent peer review of the draft Union Station Master Plan. Jennifer presented the findings of the review and directions for the revitalization of the station.
The group then proceeded to enjoy a social hour followed by a lovely dinner at the elegant ACQUA Ristorante.
