Commuting to Work: Results of the 2010 General Social Survey with Martin Turcotte, researcher at Statistics Canada. Martin will discuss various facets of travelling between home and work. He will begin by sharing information about commuting times and how frequently workers are caught in traffic, including a comparison of commuting times in major metropolitan areas by mode of transportation. He will also talk about workers’ perceptions of the time they spend commuting and car users’ perceptions of public transit. Have they ever tried using public transit to get to their current place of work? Is it convenient for them? To wrap up, Martin will illustrate the connection between the characteristics of commuting to work (commuting time, recurrence of traffic congestion, etc.) and selected subjective measures of quality of life, including stress levels and satisfaction with work–life balance.
