A Perspective on Ottawa’s Rapid Transit Evolution with David Hopper of Delcan
The Bus Transitway Program adopted in the late 1970s created strong ridership levels, but left major system decisions to the future, particularly for the downtown area. Conversion of the central section of the BRT system to LRT was approved as part of the 2008 TMP. Construction of the 13-km eastern section, called the Confederation Line, is now underway, and the environmental assessment for the 10-km western section is nearing completion. At the same time, various Transitway extensions and “Transit Intensive” and “Transit Priority” corridors are under development. David’s presentation will look at the evolution of rapid transit and some of the political forces involved in shaping the plan.
