Toronto Pearson: Union Station West? with Eileen Waechter, Director Airport Planning, Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Toronto Pearson is the second fastest growing airport in North America, serving the region’s and Canada’s key international hub and providing global connectivity to 65% of the world’s economy.

This global connectivity is fundamental to the economic growth of the region, Ontario and Canada – Toronto Pearson facilitates more than $35 billion, or almost 6%, of Ontario’s annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The airport also is a major job creator. According to a report just released by the Neptis Foundation, the employment "mega zone" around Pearson is the second-largest employment area in the country, second only to downtown Toronto, and is larger than the central business districts of Calgary, Montreal and Vancouver.

If this key economic role of Toronto Pearson is to be preserved, ground connectivity of people and goods between the airport and their travel destination/place of work, must be free of congestion. Similarly, airport area congestion must also be relieved for those who travel through the area to reach jobs across the GTHA.

Eileen will speak about the potential for leveraging Toronto Pearson as a unique transportation centre within the region, providing connectivity for the airport (the missing last kilometres) and for the airport employment area with a variety of transportation connections and new urban mobility services.
