Vision Zero in Canada, presented by Pamela Fuselli, Vice President, Knowledge Transfer and Stakeholder Relations at Parachute, and Liliana Quintero, Transportation Engineer at the City of Vancouver
Vision Zero is a traffic safety policy developed in Sweden in the late 1990s that is based on four elements: ethics, responsibility, a philosophy of safety, and creating mechanisms for change. The Swedish parliament voted in October 1997 to adopt this policy, and since then, several other countries have followed suit. Vision Zero has been applied at the municipal level in Canada. British Columbia was the first to introduce a Vision Zero strategy at the provincial level.
Pamela will provide highlights of the Vision Zero approach, its implementation in Canada and activation in Toronto. Liliana will provide a case study demonstrating how Vancouver has developed its road safety plan within a provincially mandated strategy, and specific engineering countermeasures that have been implemented.
